Top UK Rhinoplasty Surgeon, Julian Rowe-Jones on: What is facial plastic surgery?
Facial plastic surgery
Facial plastic surgery covers both: aesthetic or cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive facial plastic surgery refers to surgery to rebuild the face after trauma or after cancer surgery and many of the rules that we’ve learnt for cosmetic surgery, have come from reconstructive surgery and vice versa.
Cosmetic facial plastic surgery
Cosmetic facial plastic surgery really falls into two groups, there’s the group where we are transforming faces, with changing features that patients don’t like and making a different shape or there’s youthful or regeneration surgery, anti-aging surgery, patients were happy with how they used to look but they don’t like what ageing has done for them and in those circumstances we’re talking about freshening the appearance and making the patient look less tired. Those are the key features of describing facial plastic surgery. I think because it is difficult surgery and it is specialist surgery it is now considered really a subspecialty all of its own.
