Reasons For A Secondary Rhinoplasty

The nose has a prominent position on the face so, it’s vitally important to get it right aesthetically, working to correct any nasal deformities while enabling nasal function.

A secondary rhinoplasty is a type of revision rhinoplasty. There are many reasons why a patient might book in for this type of procedure. In this post, I’ll outline some of those reasons.

Aesthetics

When it comes to nose jobs, it can be difficult to achieve the patient’s desired results. This is because as well having an aesthetic function, the nose also has a medical function – aiding breathing. Seeking treatment with a nose specialist who has expertise in both cosmetic and function surgery – like myself, Mr Julian Rowe-Jones – could reduce the need for further rhinoplasty revisions.

Deviated septum

One reason for a secondary nose job may be a deviated septum, where the nose’s ‘inner partition’ leans to one side and can block the nasal passage(s). This can affect breathing and can also give the appearance of a crooked or twisted nose.

An ‘overdone’ appearance

A nose that has had repeated revisions may appear ‘overdone’. This can be caused when too much cartilage or bone is removed from everywhere or from one area of a nose without compensating for it elsewhere. However, many noses with this type of problem can still be operated on.

Breathing problems

Because the internal structure of the nose and external supporting structure is altered or weakened, the procedure can result in obstructions that then cause breathing problems in the patient. This can also lead to unwanted snoring at night.

Refinements

It can be hard to tell the results of your nose surgery straight away, as bruising and swelling can disguise the look of the nose. Once healed, patients occasionally want to finesse the appearance of the nose, such as lifting the tip or narrowing the nostrils.

Considerations

When considering a secondary rhinoplasty, it’s important to take a few factors into account. Firstly, you may have scar tissue from a previous surgery that can affect the results of further surgeries. secondly, your surgery may need extra cartilage – often required for ‘structural support’ – to replace existing or removed cartilage that’s damaged or ineffective. While this can sometimes be taken from deep inside the nose, occasionally other surgery may be required, to take cartilage from areas of the body such as your ear or rib.  All secondary surgery is potentially difficult and requires a surgeon with extensive experience in rhinoplasty.
