Rhinoplasty patients worry less by 70% after nose job, new study finds
Researchers at The Nose Clinic in Guildford working with the Centre for Appearance Research asked 90 patients to rate how much they worried about their noses on a scale of from 0 (not at all) to 10 (all the time). Before the operation, patients rated their worry level as 7.02 on the worry scale. After the operation, patients rated their worry at 2.09, a significant decrease in worry of 70%. This was the biggest psychological change found before and after nose surgery.
The recent study, led at The Nose Clinic by rhinoplasty specialist, Julian Rowe-Jones, revealed that patients having cosmetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty) also found their noses less noticeable and were less self-conscious after their surgery. The patients worried less about the appearance of their nose and checked their appearance less.
The study’s findings are consistent with many other studies that claim rhinoplasty patients feel an improvement in their self esteem and quality of life and subsequently worry less. Another smaller study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that patients noted less appearance-related psychological distress. The same study showed an increased rating of generic quality of life and self-esteem after rhinoplasty 12 months after surgery.
Rhinoplasty patients would worry less about their appearance after having surgery
One of Mr. Rowe-Jones’s patients said: “The result is even better than I imagined – a very subtle change that still makes a big difference. I now never have to worry about my appearance or feel awkward that my nose is an odd shape as I did. Thank you so much! I really am thrilled with the result and feel so good about it. The recovery time was minimal, especially when measured against impact.”
It is important to note that the results of the study do not suggest that rhinoplasty procedure caused patients to worry less than before, but there is certainly a very positive association with those having the procedure and the positive benefits that followed.
“Many patients worry about what their nose looks like before rhinoplasty,” said Mr Rowe-Jones. “There are some patients whose expectations are unrealistic and I will advise against surgery. But in those patients who do have surgery, whose aesthetic goals are met, benefits follow really in terms of improved self-confidence and self-esteem and that is what I am looking to achieve for all my patients, happier patients whose level of self-confidence is higher than it was before surgery.”
